In late August, there were devastating floods that impacted multiple countries in South Asia, including areas where ReachGlobal and Crisis Response were already partnering with local pastors. There are only about 0.2% evangelical Christians in the region that was impacted by this flooding. We recently received an update from a pastor in South Asia who’s been ministering to an unreached group of Sikhs.

“During our flood relief survey visits, we connected with several families affected by the disaster. Among them was one particular family with whom we continued to stay in touch. Over time the wife and her daughter began to regularly attend our online Bible teaching and soon started to grow in her faith. However, her husband strongly opposed their decision to follow Christ. Recently he came along with the village head and a few other men, accusing his wife of converting to Christianity.

In that tense moment, potentially a life-or-death moment, this sister [in Christ] stood firm and courageously declared, ‘I have decided to follow Christ, and I will never turn back. If you want to do anything to me, I am not afraid.’ To everyone’s surprise, her son, who never joined any of the online teachings before, also stood beside his mother and said, ‘I will also follow Jesus, and I will see who will stop us.’

Hearing this the village head turned to the husband and said, ‘Let her follow what she wants to follow. We can’t stop her.’ And they all left.

Today this sister continues to grow in her walk with Christ. We have encouraged her to keep praying for her husband and for the entire village.” 

These floods have opened a door into an area where Christians were unwelcome just a few months ago. Now pastors and church planters can approach previously unreached villages with compassion and the hope of the gospel, and they are being received.
