Baptism: Announcement
This is what I would include in the bulletin the day of a baptism service. It emphasizes some important truths and responses of the people of God, the body of Christ.
Baptism is a clear command of the Lord Jesus Christ for all believers (Matt. 28:18-20). This is why it is one of the ordinances of the Christian Church (the Lord’s Supper being the other). Believer baptism in water reflects a prior inward cleansing (1 Pet. 3:21) when the person was born again (Jn. 3:3, 5), made a new creation in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17), and offers an opportunity for this new believer to profess faith in the Lord Jesus Christ publicly.
Today as we celebrate the baptism of this new believer, we respond in the following four ways:
- we rejoice and give thanks to God for the new life of this believer, having been saved by grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone;
- we hear and are edified by the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and we ponder our own step of obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ in the waters of baptism and in all of life;
- we pray for those who do not know and have not received Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord that they may hear the gospel through the ear and see the gospel through the eye and believe and receive; and
- we proclaim to all the victory of Jesus Christ.
