As we prepare for our celebration of the incarnation of Jesus Christ, that which we specifically remember at Christmas with implications of this reality for all of life, both now and for eternity, here are a few texts of Scripture that explicitly inform us of why Jesus came. Please note I have highlighted the fact that Jesus came into the world (bold) and the purpose for which he came (italicized).

I encourage you to read, ponder and pray through these biblical texts during these days of the Christmas season. Even more so, I am hopeful they lead you to a deeper worship of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew 20:28: “the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Luke 19:10: For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

John 18:37: “Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world--to bear witness to the truth.”

1 Timothy 1:15: “The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.”

Hebrews 2:14-15: “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.”

1 John 3:5: “You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.”

1 Jn. 3:8b: “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.”

1 John 4:9: “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.”
