Coolest Thing Ever to Happen in a Worship Service

Last year a woman prayed to receive Christ at the close of our worship service. I led her to confess her sin, to receive forgiveness through the cross and to declare Jesus as Lord of her life. It was a moment of true and clear conversion. Her husband (not a believer) stood at her side to support her in this decision.

Her journey to that point was a long process, which I credit much to the patient, diligent and biblical teaching she received in one of our women’s Bible studies. All who heard were thrilled to learn of her new birth.

A few months later we began a series on the Sermon on the Mount. I explained that Matthew 5-7 chronicles Jesus’ teaching to those who follow Him. I addressed the difference that exists between being a part of the “crowd” and truly being a disciple of Jesus.

At the close of the message, I asked, “Are you part of the crowd or are you a disciple?” It was mostly a rhetorical question, because we are not, by culture, a congregation of “amens” and give-and-take between preacher and congregation. But on this occasion someone couldn’t hold it in: From the back of the auditorium, I heard the shout, “I’m a disciple!”

It was none other than this woman who had recently received Christ, making a public declaration as to her identity.
