Scoty Pasupuleti: I Met Christ Through the Scriptures

An EFCA pastor shares the story of his first encounter with Jesus—and the passion it's created in him today.

I was born to a Hindu family in Chennai, India. It's the same place where the Apostle Thomas was martyred. At 11 years old, I did a lot of Hindu practices—chanting and singing Hindu songs—and studied at the Hindu school.

Our family suffered a tragedy where my mom became blind. A few friends gifted us the Bible, and we kept the Bible under her pillow. One day, my mom began to mutter Luke 1:46-47. I wondered, 'Why would a blind woman recite a verse in the Bible?' That triggered my father's mind and my mind, and we questioned why we went after all the Hindu gods when this God was coming and communicating to us.

I think where it really struck a chord was when I was trying to go to the temple, trying to seek answers for some deep questions which I couldn't articulate. Jesus and the Bible, the Scriptures, spoke to my soul and satisfied the longings and thirsts in my heart.

That's my goal—to fall in love with the Word of God and fall in love with the God of the Word. That’s my whole vision for my life so far.

I met Christ through the Scriptures, through the various ways He was trying to communicate in not the normal, natural way—like a blind woman quoting Scripture. That was the start of my journey into knowing God. I met one Christian. One Christian led to another group of Christians, then eventually the family and community of the church.

My wife and I have been in the United States for nine years as she pursues her Ph.D. at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. During COVID, I trained for three years in pastoring and preaching, and that led me to serve as the associate pastor at LifeSpring Community Church.

The EFCA resonated with me because they’re very faithful to the Scripture. Scripture was the first interaction in my life with Christ, when my mom quoted those verses. I feel how the Lord is using Scripture in my own ministry to help build people up, not only knowing the Word of God, but helping them to know the God of the Word in both aspects. It’s my passion to help people fall in love with God. That's my goal—to fall in love with the Word of God and fall in love with the God of the Word. That’s my whole vision for my life so far.
